Anesthesiology and pediatric gastroenterology, brain damage. A very concerned mother scheduled her 9 year old daughter for a gastroenterology endoscopic exam. This is where the child is placed under anesthesia and the pediatric Gastroenterology slides a tube down into the stomach with a camera to explore the area. During this procedure, the nurse anesthetist failed to properly monitor the child’s decline in heart rate and oxygen and the child’s heart stopped. After being revived by an emergency room physician the child suffered permanent paralysis and extensive brain damage, resulting in a quadriplegic condition with lost brain activity.
